Lost Dog Prevention
TIPS TO HELP PREVENT YOUR GREYHOUND FROM GETTING LOOSE
- Padlock all gates to your yard, and double check that gates are secure before every turnout, especially after any people have visited
- Install strong tight hinges and springs on gates so they automatically swing shut
- Periodically check your fencing for areas in need of repair, especially after storms
- When a visitor is at the door have another person hold the greyhound, or if alone, kennel the hound or block them with a baby gate in a safe area
- Install a lock on storm dorms or install a hook and eye so the door doesn’t open should a hound jump up and open the door
- Do not leave windows open far enough for a greyhound to jump through the screen
- Check your hound’s collar – collars can loosen over time. Proper fitting for a martingale collar is critical!
- Wrap the lead around wrist several times so you have a secure hold that can’t be broken easily—or use the “slip knot” method
- Use an escape-proof harness for a hound that spooks easily
- Load hounds into and out of a vehicle through the side door versus the hatchback. If possible, have somebody in the vehicle holding the dog before opening the door
- Be sure automatic garage doors are fully closed before opening up doors to vehicle
- Review tips to prevent hound escape with caregivers in your absence. Be sure they have contact information for GPA‑MN so members can help in the search
