Heartworm Prescription Disclaimer

Obtaining a Prescription for Heartworm Prevention Medication

As part of the routine care of your newly adopted greyhound, you will need to obtain a prescription for heartworm prevention medication. Your hound has been tested for heartworm as part of the GPA MN incoming vetting process, and given monthly preventatives during foster care. Included with the vetting paperwork you received at the time of adoption there is documentation of a test result indicating that your hound tested negative for heartworm.

This negative test result can be taken to your vet to obtain a prescription for heartworm prevention medication. In the state of Minnesota a heartworm medication prescription can only be dispensed by a vet with which you have an established relationship. This means you will not be able to obtain the prescription from the vet where the test was done. You must obtain the prescription by taking the negative test result to the veterinarian where you will be taking your hound for future visits.
